ON MY MIND: LOTR? Mulan? Die Hard? I don’t know!

“What’s your favourite film?”

It’s always incredibly hard for me to answer this question and I always give at least five options before I just say, “that’s like asking me which is my favourite child”. Not that I have any. If you have to ask, at least phrase it as “what’s your current  favourite film?”, or “what’s your favourite [insert genre] film?” That way, by narrowing it down, the person won’t feel like they’re cheating on all other great films by picking just one.

The films in your favourites list may be so varied and different, and that’s OK. Each film can be your favourite because it speaks to a different part of you, reflecting different aspects of your personality. A bit of Mean Girls to satisfy your teen heart, and a bit of Gone Girl for your inner psycho (or just your love of clever thrillers).

Loving films is loving a language, an art medium that presents you an adventure, provokes your thoughts, pushes your understandings, and lifts or dampens your mood. I think it would be sad to only ever love just one film, but if you do, it’s probably because you appreciate it from so many angles that each time you watch it, it could be a different film to you.

Sometimes I’m too lazily to explain my list of favourites so I’ll just spurt out an answer that makes me sound like a cinema God a.k.a. pompous hipster. Liam Maguren has a great article on how to answer this question by keeping three examples in his conversational tool box; from the “I don’t love films, I love cinema” to the “I just want to mess with you” answers.

My favourite films depend on my mood, the genre, why I’m watching it, where I’m watching it, who I’m watching it with, or if it’s a part of a series, a feature, short or sequence. AND there are just too many good films out there to only ever choose one. I could easily name great iconic films like Rear Window or Disney’s Mulan as my favourite films. My list is endless, which I guess is why this blog exists; so I can keep ranting about all my favourites.

So this list is NOT IN ORDER. It is a quick list written from the top of my head of my favourite films.

  • The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers
  • The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King
  • Forrest Gump
  • Mulan
  • Troy
  • Letter From An Unknown Woman
  • Rear Window
  • 12 Angry Men
  • Die Hard
  • The Shawshank Redemption

  • Grave of the Fireflies
  • The Sixth Sense

My heart either sighs or stutters for these films.
